This page is designed to answer new members Frequently Asked Questions and provide information about trail riding.
Please refer to the other pages within this web site, the National TRF web site, or come along to our club night, for more detailed information.
Rights of Way :
Your bike must be road legal as we ride on ancient un-surfaced roads. These are Byways Open to All Traffic, known as BOATs or Byways, and Unclassified County Roads (UCRs). These are shown on ordnance survey maps.
Joining the TRF :
You can try out trail riding with the Surrey TRF group without joining the TRF.
But if you enjoy the run & want to continue riding with us we would expect you to join the TRF.
Membership forms can be downloaded from the National TRF or Surrey TRF web site.
National TRF web site: www.trf.org.uk: there you can download a membership form
When you have joined the TRF please email your telephone number and email address to
Steve Sharp steve.sharp8@btopenworld.com .
If you do not have email please contact Steve on 020 8773 4204 or 0771001271.
Surrey TRF Information:
Our web site contains lots of information about trail riding, please browse through the various pages.
We also have the Surrey TRF Forum for discussing topics and advertising runs.
http://surreytrf.free-forums.org/surreytrf.html
We have set up a group email for members to send & receive information, including forthcoming runs.
When you join send Steve Sharp an email and he will add you to the group.
Runs:
Club runs are advertised on Surrey TRF Forum http://surreytrf.free-forums.org/surreytrf.html
Runs are also advertised via our Surrey TRF yahoo group email. (Members only)
Runs are limited to 6 riders; contact the run leader to book a place.
We have two types of runs, 'Easy' & 'Intermediate'. The Easy runs are ideal for new members,
and 'Intermediate' runs are for more experienced riders. After a few 'Easy' runs you will probably want to try the 'Intermediate' runs.
Trail riding is more difficult than it appears bear this in mind, persevere with it and you will enjoy it more with each run.
Note: Both the email and the Forum are great places to advertise your run and ask for other members to go riding with you.
Before the Run - What You Will Need:
Ensure that your bike is quiet, noise is the main problem that people complain about.
Its a good idea to slightly slacken off front brake & clutch lever, so they move when they hit the ground, rather than breaking
Enough tools to carry out repairs on the trail.
Spare inner tube (21" will fit both wheels), tyre levers and pump
Spare split link for chain
Clothing: Essential - Moto X boots, eye protection, knee protectors, waterproofs.
Recommended - Elbow protectors and ideally a motocross-type helmet, which is light and allows air to circulate.
You will get hot on the trail, so do not overdress.
Its a good idea to fit hand guards. The wrap around type, also known as bark bustes, will protect your hands and levers.
Sense of humour
Run Rules:
Turn engine off when meeting horses
Slow down to walking pace when meeting walkers
Close gates
At all junctions or turnings ensure that you wait for the rider behind you.
If you do get lost or separated, wait where you are, we will come back for you.
